Class 5 State Tournament Updates

🥎 VHSL Quarterfinal Recap: Four Teams Remain in a Championship Chase Built on Grit

The VHSL softball quarterfinals are in the books, and while the scoreboard may show wins and losses, the stories behind each game tell us a lot more about the teams now preparing for the biggest weekend of the year.

⚔️ Great Bridge 4, Kecoughtan 3 — One Inning Made the Difference

On paper, this may register as an upset, but the margins were razor-thin. Kecoughtan battled hard and led early, but the fourth inning proved to be the breaking point. Great Bridge capitalized on a surge of momentum, putting up all four of their runs in that single frame. Despite a spirited push, Kecoughtan couldn’t climb back. It was a tough end to a strong season, while Great Bridge showed just how dangerous a well-timed rally can be.

🧱 Midlothian 8, Riverbend 2 — Methodical and Merciless

There were no surprises here. Fresh off their 2–1 win over previously undefeated Godwin, Midlothian walked into this game with a quiet confidence—and left with an 8–2 victory. They didn’t dominate with any single moment; instead, they steadily won each inning. A sixth-inning home run added punctuation to a game that had been decided well before it. Midlothian remains undefeated and continues to look like a team with both power and poise.

🧭 Kellam 4, Granby 2 — A Veteran’s Composure

Kellam, always a fixture in the deep rounds of the state tournament, once again showed why they belong. Granby struck first with a run in the second, but Kellam answered in the fourth and never gave the lead back. The game seemingly wrapped after five innings, raising some questions about its ending (why only five?), but the result was clear—Kellam advances, and does so with the kind of maturity expected from a team built for long playoff runs.

🎯 Godwin 6, Lightridge 3 — One Pitcher’s Bat Changes Everything

Two 21–1 teams. Two elite pitchers. But one player changed the game. Godwin’s ace didn’t just control things from the circle—she stepped up at the plate and delivered two thunderous two-run home runs. That was the difference. While the score reads 6–3, the game never felt that close. Lightridge loaded the bases twice but couldn’t cash in, as Godwin’s outfield delivered clutch defensive plays. Godwin racked up 8 hits and 5 walks; Lightridge wasn’t far behind with 6 hits and 7 walks—but in the big moments, Godwin delivered.

🔮 Final Four Outlook — It’s Anyone’s Game

Here’s where we stand:

  • Great Bridge (20–7) vs. Godwin (22–1)
  • Kellam (25–1) vs. Midlothian (22–0)

The paths here have been tangled:

  • Great Bridge has lost twice to Kellam (2–1 and 4–3).
  • Kellam’s only loss was to Godwin (2–1).
  • Godwin’s only loss? Just last week—to Midlothian (2–1).

It’s a web of near-equals. Midlothian is the lone undefeated, powered by a Division I-caliber pitching and one of the most complete rosters in the state. But each of these teams has taken out contenders and learned from close calls. What’s left now is a high-stakes, high-talent toss-up. The title is up for grabs.
