Class 5 Top Ten (03-27-26)

With most teams only a few games into the season, Class 5 is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive classifications in the state. Dominant pitching performances and early statement wins are defining the landscape. Here’s our VA Prep Class 5 Top 10 heading into spring break:

1. Mataoca

Mataoca takes the top spot behind what may be the best pitcher in the state. A recent no-hitter—featuring just one walk and an eye-popping 20 strikeouts—cements their position as the early favorite in Class 5.

2. Great Bridge

Great Bridge has been nothing short of dominant, opening the season with four shutout victories. Even more impressive—they have yet to allow a single run. This is a team built to contend deep into June.

3. Lightridge

Lightridge features a Top 5 pitcher in the state, and that alone makes them a serious contender. Early results show they can win tight, low-scoring games—exactly the formula needed for postseason success.

4. Hickory

Hickory is off to a strong 3-0 start, highlighted by a quality win over Kellam. Early signs point to a balanced team capable of competing with anyone in the classification.

5. Riverbend

Riverbend slots in at #5 behind another Top 10 arm in the state. Pitching depth continues to be a defining factor across Class 5, and Riverbend is right in the mix.

6. Deep Run

Now competing in Class 5 (Region 5C), Deep Run has already turned heads with a win over Midlothian in a scrimmage. After a strong showing last year in a higher classification, they bring both experience and momentum.

7. Midlothian

After an undefeated season last year, Midlothian has taken its first loss—falling to a highly ranked St. Catherine’s squad. Despite the setback, this remains one of the most dangerous and proven teams in the field.

8. Ocean Lakes

Ocean Lakes continues the trend with yet another Top 10 pitcher in the state. If the offense provides enough support, this is a team that could rise quickly in the rankings.

9. Glen Allen

Glen Allen rounds out the group of pitching-heavy contenders. With a Top 10 arm, they have the ability to stay in—and win—tight games throughout the season.

10. Kecoughtan

Kecoughtan enters the Top 10 despite a loss to #2 Great Bridge. That result alone doesn’t diminish their potential, and they remain firmly in the conversation within a competitive region.
