With district tournaments underway and regional brackets beginning to take shape, the postseason picture across Virginia softball is finally coming into focus. Some regions feature clear favorites, while others look completely wide open heading into playoff action. Here is our latest regional outlook across Classes 4, 5, and 6.

Class 4

Region 4A

Region 4A has been one of the more balanced regions in Class 4 this season. VHSL Grafton Clippers and Jamestown Eagles may not carry perfect records, but both have established themselves as the teams to beat out of the Bay Rivers District. The two programs split their regular-season meetings, which only adds to the intrigue should they meet again in regional play.

Meanwhile, Churchland Truckers has quietly positioned itself as another serious contender. Coming out of the Eastern District, Churchland has consistently competed against quality opposition and looks capable of making a deep postseason run if the bracket breaks favorably.

Region 4B

Eastern View Cyclones enters Region 4B as the clear favorite after a dominant regular season that featured just one loss. The Cyclones have looked complete on both sides of the ball and appear poised for a long playoff run.

Dinwiddie Generals has also put together an impressive campaign, with most of its struggles coming against Class 5 powerhouse Matoaca Warriors. Dinwiddie has shown the ability to compete with top-tier teams and should not be overlooked in the regional field.

Out of the Capital District, Hanover Hawks rounds out our top three contenders. Hanover has steadily improved throughout the year and could become a dangerous matchup as postseason pressure builds.

Region 4C

Loudoun County Captains and Tuscarora Huskies enter regional play as the early leaders in 4C. Both programs have consistently handled district competition and appear ready for deep playoff pushes.

Still, Region 4C has enough depth to produce surprises. Woodgrove Wolverines remains very much in the mix and has the talent to disrupt the expected order. Broad Run Spartans also deserves consideration as a potential dark horse heading into the bracket.

Region 4D

Amherst County Lancers has looked like one of the strongest Class 4 teams in Virginia all season and remains our early favorite to control Region 4D. The Lancers have consistently delivered against quality competition and continue to look like a serious state-title threat.

But Sherando Warriors is right there with them. A strong 17-2 record has positioned Sherando as a legitimate challenger capable of making a deep postseason run.

James Wood Colonels and Halifax County Comets round out what could become one of the most competitive regional races in Class 4.

Class 5

Region 5A

As we have said throughout the season, Region 5A may be the most competitive softball region in the state. Ocean Lakes Dolphins, Kellam Knights, Deep Creek Hornets, Hickory Hawks, and Great Bridge Wildcats all have realistic paths to the state tournament.

In the Beach District, Ocean Lakes and Kellam both finished district play at 15-1, splitting their two regular-season meetings. Ocean Lakes enters postseason play riding an eight-game winning streak and appears to have momentum on its side.

Meanwhile, the Southeastern District produced another heavyweight battle. Deep Creek and Hickory each finished 11-2, while Great Bridge finished close behind at 10-3. Deep Creek owns key victories over both Hickory and Great Bridge, while Hickory also picked up an important win over Great Bridge during the regular season.

Region 5B

Region 5B appears to be shaping up as a three-team battle between Menchville Monarchs, Kecoughtan Warriors, and Granby Comets.

Menchville dominated the Peninsula District with a perfect 14-0 district record and handed Kecoughtan both of its district losses. Granby was equally dominant in the Eastern District, finishing 14-0 in district play.

The bracket setup could create an early regional showdown between Kecoughtan and Granby, with the winner likely advancing to face Menchville for the regional title.

Region 5C

Matoaca Warriors enters Region 5C as the clear favorite after an incredible regular season. Matoaca finished 19-1, carries a 15-game winning streak into postseason play, and has allowed only eight total runs all season. Even more impressive, the Warriors currently own an eight-game shutout streak.

Defending state champion Midlothian Trojans also enters postseason play in strong form, bringing an 11-game winning streak and a Dominion District title into the region tournament.

Deep Run Wildcats captured the Colonial District with a perfect 9-0 district record, while Franklin County Eagles won the Blue Ridge District at 8-1. Region 5C may ultimately require Matoaca to defeat multiple district champions just to advance to states.

Region 5D

Lightridge Bolts remains the only undefeated Class 5 team in Virginia at 20-0 and continues to look like the team to beat in Region 5D. The Bolts won the Potomac District regular season title, although they still must navigate a dangerous district tournament field.

Riverbend Bears finished second in the Commonwealth District at 10-2 but was the top-performing Class 5 team in that district. Riverside Ram also finished second in the Potomac District and will look to make another strong postseason push.

These three teams appear positioned to battle for the region’s two state tournament berths. Last season, Lightridge captured the regional title while Riverbend defeated Riverside to secure the second state spot. This year could produce a very similar outcome.

Class 6

Region 6A

Once again, Grassfield Grizzlies and Western Branch Bruins appear to be the teams leading Region 6A. Western Branch suffered a regular-season loss to Grassfield and will be looking for revenge once regional play begins.

At the same time, Cosby Titans and Manchester Lancers have both shown enough consistency to become major factors in the regional bracket.

Region 6B

Mountain View Wildcats looks strong heading into the postseason after winning the Commonwealth District, although Riverbend Bears pushed them throughout district competition.

The Cedar Run District should feature another intense postseason battle between Battlefield Bobcats and Independence Tigers, while Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets and Gainesville Cardinals remain dangerous playoff teams.

In the Cardinal District, Colgan Sharks and Forest Park Bruins continue to battle for positioning, while Woodbridge Vikings and Hylton Bulldogs are expected to re-enter the regional conversation.

Region 6C

Hayfield Hawks has steadily built one of the most competitive teams in Northern Virginia and now looks capable of making serious noise beyond the National District. A convincing victory over Edison Eagles strengthened Hayfield’s position as a major Region 6C contender.

We have seen both Lake Braddock Bruins and West Springfield Spartans play at elite levels in previous seasons, and whichever team survives the Patriot District tournament could emerge battle-tested heading into regional play.

Robinson Rams, South County Stallions, Edison, and Thomas Jefferson Colonials should all remain competitive, but our expectation is that Hayfield, Lake Braddock, and West Springfield will ultimately battle for Region 6C supremacy.

Region 6D

The Concorde District tournament championship remains delayed, but the familiar powers are once again emerging in Region 6D. Madison Warhawks and South Lakes Seahawks remain the region’s top contenders, with Madison appearing slightly ahead entering postseason play.

We expect Madison and Langley Saxons to ultimately represent Region 6D, although Yorktown Patriots, Wakefield Warriors, and Oakton Cougars should make the path difficult.

The Liberty District tournament matchup between Langley and Yorktown could produce one of the better pitching duels of the postseason, but Langley appears to have the edge entering region play.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in 6D is that McLean Highlanders is out of the postseason picture altogether. An upset loss to the scrappy Marshall Statesmen knocked McLean out of regional contention and reshaped the playoff landscape in Northern Virginia.
