Class 4 is off to a fast and competitive start, with several teams jumping out early while others prepare for tougher tests ahead. With a long season still in front of us, early results are beginning to separate contenders—but plenty can still change. Here’s our VA Prep Class 4 Top 10 heading into the next stretch of games:
1. Mecklenburg County
Mecklenburg County claims the top spot after a perfect 5-0 start. They’ve handled early competition with consistency, but the real question is sustainability. With a long season ahead, we’ll see if they can maintain this level as the schedule toughens.
2. Amherst County
Amherst County sits firmly at #2, but a major test looms with Jefferson Forest out of the Seminole District. That matchup should give us a clearer picture of whether Amherst is ready to contend for the top spot.
3. Woodgrove
A familiar name in the Top 10, Woodgrove continues to deliver. This is a program that knows how to win in May and June, and we fully expect them to be playing deep into the state tournament once again.
4. Powhatan
Powhatan makes an early statement with an impressive win over Cosby, signaling they’re ready to compete with top-tier teams. If they build on that result, they could quickly move even higher.
5. Orange County
Orange County remains one of the more intriguing teams in the rankings. A matchup against #10 Charlottesville should provide early clarity, but for now, it’s simply too early to fully gauge their ceiling.
6. Patrick Henry (Ashland)
Patrick Henry faces one of the more challenging schedules in Class 4, with matchups against Godwin and Deep Run on the horizon. That level of competition should prepare them well for postseason play—and could elevate them quickly in the rankings.
7. King George
King George is off to a solid start with two early wins. While the sample size is small, they’ve positioned themselves well and will look to build momentum as the season progresses.
8. Blacksburg
Blacksburg enters the Top 10 as a steady presence. While still developing their early-season resume, they remain a team capable of competing consistently within the classification.
9. Varina
Varina turned heads with a dominant win over Thomas Jefferson (Richmond). If that level of offensive production continues, they could become one of the more dangerous teams in the middle of the rankings.
10. Charlottesville
Charlottesville rounds out the Top 10 and immediately faces a key matchup against #5 Orange County. That game could quickly reshape the middle of the rankings and give insight into both teams.
