Class 4 Top Ten

  1. Amherst County
  2. Eastern View
  3. Sherando
  4. Patrick Henry (Ashland)
  5. Loudoun County
  6. Mecklenburg County
  7. James Wood
  8. Dinwiddie
  9. Woodgrove
  10. Tuscarora

Analysis:
Amherst County continues to look like the clear class of the field, maintaining its grip as the strongest team in the state with no real challengers emerging. Eastern View climbs to #2 after an impressive week highlighted by a strong win over King George, while Sherando edges up and appears firmly positioned in the top tier heading into next week. Patrick Henry (Ashland) drops following a tight loss to Hanover, the current Capital District leader, raising some questions about consistency against top competition. Loudoun County suffered a narrow defeat to surging Tuscarora, who rounds out the Top 10 after an excellent week that included a key win over Woodgrove. Mecklenburg County faces an important test ahead against Randolph-Henry, while James Wood continues to search for answers against Sherando if they hope to reassert themselves as a true state contender. Dinwiddie looks poised for a quieter week with favorable matchups, and despite a recent loss, Woodgrove still has the talent to make noise come postseason time.

  • 5/2/26 Update: Post-publication, it looks like Amherst County has lost to Brookeville. While this doesn’t change our Class 4 Top Ten, this loss represents a major shakeup for the overall ranking within VHSL. More next week!

Class 5 Top Ten

  1. Lightridge
  2. Matoaca
  3. Deep Creek
  4. Hickory
  5. Deep Run
  6. Riverside
  7. Kecoughtan
  8. Kellam
  9. Granby
  10. Riverbend

Analysis:
The top four remain unchanged this week, but there was plenty of movement and statement wins just behind them. Lightridge strengthened its hold on the #1 spot with a quality Top 10 win over Riverbend, while Deep Creek continues to build momentum with key victories over both Hickory and Great Bridge. Hickory showed its competitiveness with a win over Kecoughtan, though inconsistency remains after falling to Deep Creek. The upcoming week brings major implications, headlined by the continuing Lightridge–Riverside rivalry, where Riverside has historically disrupted Lightridge’s early-season dominance and will look to do so again in a two-game set. Meanwhile, Kellam and Granby square off in a critical Top 10 matchup that could reshape the middle of the rankings.

Class 6 Top Ten

  1. Madison
  2. McLean
  3. Mountain View
  4. Colgan
  5. Wakefield
  6. West Springfield
  7. Langley
  8. Edison
  9. Grassfield
  10. Hayfield

Analysis:
Madison remains firmly entrenched at #1 and continues to set the standard in Class 6, with an upcoming test against Oakton that could further solidify their dominance heading into Concorde District play. McLean rises to #2 following Wakefield’s loss to Yorktown, but faces a defining stretch with matchups against both Wakefield and rival Langley that will likely determine the Liberty District pecking order. Wakefield slips to #5 but remains dangerous, especially as district play intensifies among Yorktown, McLean, and Langley. Mountain View holds steady at #3 but will be challenged by a strong Gainesville squad, while Colgan faces a demanding week against Forest Park and Woodbridge in Cardinal District play. West Springfield appears set for a lighter stretch, while Edison and Hayfield renew their National District rivalry after Hayfield took the previous meeting—though a reversal would not be surprising. Grassfield continues to impress but faces one of its toughest tests yet against Deep Creek, making this a pivotal week across multiple regions as playoff positioning begins to take shape.
