🏆 Region 5A Softball Heats Up: Kellam Eyes Redemption, Great Bridge Surprises
As the VHSL Class 5 softball tournament barrels toward the finish line, the spotlight in Region 5A falls squarely on Kellam High School, the reigning regional champions, and an unexpected challenger in Great Bridge. After a week of high-stakes matchups, comebacks, and breakout performances, the stage is set for an electrifying conclusion to one of the state’s most competitive regions.
⚔️ Kellam Knights: Veteran Poise Meets Championship Grit
Located in Virginia Beach, the Kellam Knights are no strangers to the postseason spotlight. After capturing the Region 5A title in 2024 and narrowly falling to Riverside in the Class 5 state championship, Kellam returned this season with a mission — and so far, they’re delivering. Though they suffered a tight loss earlier this season to perennial power Godwin, the Knights rebounded with a gritty regional run, culminating in a narrow victory over Great Bridge to reclaim their Region 5A crown. Kellam, currently ranked #3 in the state by MaxPreps, will face the winner of Region 5B (Kecoughtan OR Granby) in the state quarterfinals. With battle-tested experience and offensive depth, Kellam remains a top contender to make another deep run.
🐾 Great Bridge: The Sleeper Team That Roared
Don’t sleep on Great Bridge. Coming into the tournament, our prediction centered on Ocean Lakes, but it was Great Bridge who won the game with a signature win over them — flipping expectations and making their case as this year’s dark horse. Their matchup with Kellam in the regional final wasn’t just competitive — it was a statement. Great Bridge stayed toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the state, falling just short in a nail-biter. Their tenacity, defensive focus, and clutch hitting could make them a dangerous opponent in the state competition.
