🥎 Region 6A Softball Update: Western Branch Dominates, Glen Allen Grits It Out
As the dust settles on the Region 6A softball tournament, two teams stand tall: Western Branch, riding one of the most dominant records in the state, and Glen Allen, a scrappy squad that’s weathered one of the toughest schedules in Virginia. Both have clinched berths in the VHSL Class 6 state tournament, and their next games will finally put Region 6A to the test against elite competition from across the Commonwealth.
💪 Western Branch: A Quiet Giant Roars Into the State Tournament
With a 19–1 VHSL record, Western Branch has been a model of consistency and power all season. After a statement-making victory over Hickory, a traditional powerhouse, and strong wins over Grassfield and Cosby, the Bruins have left no doubt: they are for real. It’s their first state tournament appearance in at least three years, and they’re entering the big stage with momentum, experience, and confidence. Ranked in the top 20 statewide by MaxPreps, Western Branch has done everything right — the only thing left to prove is how they match up against the best from other regions. And that’s the catch: Region 6A doesn’t see much cross-play with other Class 6 regions during the regular season. So while Western Branch has ruled its corner of the state, the unknown remains. Can their dominance translate against teams like Madison or McLean? We’ll find out soon enough. But don’t bet against a team this hot.
🐾 Glen Allen: The Battled-Tested Underdog
By contrast, Glen Allen enters the state bracket with a more turbulent résumé — but don’t let the 14–6 VHSL record fool you. This is a team that has tested itself repeatedly against top-tier talent from both Class 5 and Class 6. With signature wins over Cosby and Grassfield, the Jaguars have proven they can hang with the best. They’ve also taken losses to elite Class 5 squads like Matoaca and Godwin, but those games may be exactly what prepares them to rise in high-pressure moments. As they now face Western Branch — arguably one of the hottest teams in the state — Glen Allen will need to summon every ounce of grit, experience, and timely hitting to pull off the upset. It won’t be easy, but the Richmond-area squad knows what adversity looks like, and that could give them the edge when things get tight.
