Region Tournament Outlook (05/19/23)

The 2023 Region tournaments will be starting soon. Let’s take a look at the leaders and projections for each region:

Region 6A – Region 6A is the most difficult to determine since these have teams from a variety of districts without a clear district tournament similar to other regions. However, Kellam looks to be the leader, with a dominant regular season record and is currently ranked #2 in the VHSL Class 6 Rankings. However, Cosby is the 2022 state runner-up, and Western Branch is always one of the best in the state. This region should be fun to watch.

Region 6B – Cedar Run and Cardinal districts are both highly competitive. Cardinal has both Woodbridge Senior and Colgan in the running. But Cedar Run will bring an interesting competition. District favorite Osbourn Park lost out to a strong performance by John Champe. Patriot, too, beat the talented Freedom (South Riding). All four of these Cedar Run teams should be tough to beat.

Region 6C – Region 6C is always fun given the size of the tournament. All of the National and Patriot make up this bracket play, so any team can win or lose any game. Lake Braddock had a dominant win over a strong Robinson team. Both teams will do well, but West Springfield could have a good run, too. On the National side, Hayfield has the highest VHSL Class 6 Ranking, but struggled last year in the early rounds with the same undefeated record. It will be interesting to see how the National Conference fairs against the strong Patriot teams.

Region 6D – The Concorde district looks competitive. Centreville and South Lakes are both incredibly strong teams. But Madison, the returning state champion, always seems to find ways to win. Congrats to Oakton, who had a great win to make it to the Region tournament. On the Liberty side, McLean finished the season strong. They look to be in a good position. But Wakefield and Langley are both well-coached. It will be interesting to see how the Liberty teams do against the top-notch Concorde district this year.
